THE End is Nigh

In 2084, a secret society known as The Ecclesia have developed a powerful prediction system known as Future Now. After decades of disasters that almost destroyed humanity, the Ecclesia use Future Now to test paths that would lead humanity to what the Ecclesia believe is our best possible future. However, a threat has emerged, a dark space that the Ecclesia call ‘The Unravelling’ and it scares the hell out of them. Future Now struggles to see beyond The Unravelling with any accuracy - and what it can see suggests that most of humanity is fated to die.

The Colonies

The earth’s economy is booming in the year 2084 thanks to the thriving off-earth industries that are building humanity's future in the stars. But, if the growth of the colonies were disrupted, it could trigger a massive depression, potentially plunging the entire solar system into a deep, dark age. Some of the events that are threatening the stability of the Colonies include;

• The Carbon Wars: The Carbon nanotube boom has made the fragile Venusian colonies' abundant resource more valuable than ever. Will the nations and corporations fighting to control it lead humanity into its first interplanetary war.

• Mars Nuked: Powerful developers are committed to a secret plan to rapidly terraform Mars through nuclear detonation - tough luck for the existing colonists. Can they be stopped? The Earth

After humanity pulled together to survive the climate disasters of the 40’s and 50’s, we rebuilt our cities, went seriously green, and reduced income inequality. Now though, the years of relative prosperity have seen our worst instincts re-emerge. Authoritarianism is on the rise. Massive profits flowing from the colonies have re-created the haves and have nots, and new super-powers have emerged seeking to establish their dominance. As a result, there is an alarming rise in people who want to burn the entire system down, and whose terrorist activities are making the future impossible to put in focus. 

Some of the events that are threatening the stability of Earth include;  

• Climate Change: humanity embraces a significantly more sustainable lifestyle, but a number of factors have led to the first increase in Carbon levels in the atmosphere in decades. Read the Climate Change deep dive COMING SOON

• A Global Hack: On earth, every move you make is watched by millions of cameras. The Mirror is supposed to be there to keep you safe, but it increasingly keeps you under control. The Virts

Massive improvements to Virtual and Augmented Reality allows anybody to transport themselves instantly to any place, or any time whether it’s to design a new Mars community, travel to ancient Greece or explore a fantastical world of their own creation. Life in “The Virts” is exciting, magical and intoxicating - so intoxicating that more and more people are spending their entire lives within them.  In addition to the seductive nature of this new world, an increasing amount of human commerce, politics and science also depends on the technologies of The Virts. If The Virts failed so too would human civilization.

The Ecclesia

The Ecclesia created Future Now to help them “guide” humanity to the best possible future. Together the organization has the ability to steer the fate of the most powerful countries and corporations in the Universe. Which means they can, in effect, control us all. The Unravelling threatens that control, so the Ecclesia are desperate to figure out what the Unravelling is, and how they can stop it. To save humanity, yes, but also to save their own influence. Some of the events that are threatening the stability of the Ecclesia include;

• Infighting Amongst The Ecclesia: With the uncertainty surrounding the Unravelling, the Ecclesian council has seen increased disagreements. Could this lead to a schism?
